Keeping kids healthy

Having healthy kids starts before they are even conceived. Proactive parenting begins at least 4 months before conception to prepare the healthiest eggs and sperm.  The healthier mum is before pregnancy, the better environment the child has to develop within. Clearing infections, toxicity, nutritional deficiencies or excesses and balancing stress and emotions are essential. The mothers body actually programs the child in preparation for its time in the world. Anxious mothers tend to produce anxious babies. The adult offspring of nurturing mothers showed significantly reduced behavioral fearfulness in comparison to the offspring exposed to low levels of nurturing. Regardless of the words used, exposure to the sounds of human speech builds the circuitry in the infant brain that creates the path for more words to be absorbed. The more words the child hears by age one, the larger the vocabulary at age two. The cognitive advantages of early intellectual stimulation carry forward as a child reaches school age. From the earliest months of life, babies who are encouraged by caregivers to take an interest in their environments and to explore their world through vision, touch, and hearing score higher on cognitive and language tests both at preschool and primary school.

Many studies have associated tobacco smoke exposure with an increased risk for various diseases in infants and children, as well as increasing the risk of asthma, otitis media and sudden death syndrome have been attributed to the effects of passive smoking.

A report from New Zealand of a study of 1265 children who were evaluated for 10 years showed that children who were introduced to four or more types of solid foods before the age of 4 months were 300% more likely to develop recurrent eczema than were those children not exposed to early feeding.

There is also a link between repeated antibiotic therapy and behavioural disorders particularly ADD and Autism. Glue ear is a common precursor which is treated with ABs these increase the overgrowth of candida.

*Children who have had fewer vaccines, fewer antibiotics and have diets containing live lactobacilli have reduced incidence of atopy (Lancet 1999)

Peter DaArmo suggests that if giving injections type Os should look out for signs of inflammation such as fever or joint pain, try feverfew as a treatment for reactions. Type O mums should avoid the flu vaccination during pregnancy as it may cause antibodies that attack the foetus. Blood type Bs are more prone to severe neurological reactions, so if vaccinating they must be healthy, no colds, flu infections, pregnant type B mums should also avoid the flu vaccination. Blood types A and ABs will respond OK to vaccination.

Naturopaths recommend treating illnesses as they arise with herbs nutrition and homoeopathics, which help strengthen the immune response and give lifelong immunity. Homoeopaths believe that if children are given appropriate constitutional remedies, all aspects of their health will improve, enabling them to cope more effectively with any viral or bacterial invasion of the body.

Lifestyle: There is ample evidence that things like stress, pollution, and inadequate rest lower immune response in both adults and children. While total avoidance of such factors is almost impossible in our mechanised society, it is important to learn the art of dealing with these. Meditation, spiritual interests, music, hobbies, etc. can be useful in producing a balanced lifestyle.

Natural Supplements: Although it is preferable to obtain the necessary micro-nutrients, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, and so on from wholesome foods, this is not always possible, esp. for people living in the city. The nutritional value of food rapidly deteriorates through storage, heating, cooking, irradiation, chemical treatments, and other forms of processing, It may therefore be advisable to include some natural supplements in the diet, to ensure that deficiencies of essential nutrients do not develop. Common nutritional deficiencies in children include Iron, Zinc, Iodine, Copper, Selenium, Molybdenum, Vitamin A and essential fatty acids (especially DHA).
