Contraception
For all sexually active women contraception is an on going concern. We need to choose a method which suits our lifestyle and our body. Not every method of contraception is suitable for everyone.
For example, the oral contraceptive pill, whether it be combined oestrogen and progesterone, progesterone only, low or high dose, in many women creates unwanted side effects such as bloating, depression, weight gain, moodiness and many others.
In fact 50% of women stop taking the pill within one year due to side effects. Besides side effects, there are other reason to consider alternatives to the pill such as the long term risks of breast cancer and thrombotic events. Some women can not take the pill due to family or person health concerns which contraindicate its use.
Many women these days are put on the pill to control their periods (heavy bleeding, pain or irregularity). While improving the symptoms on a monthly basis, this practice does nothing to correct the natural hormonal balance or improve fertility, leaving the woman right where she started when she stops taking the pill.
As a natural therapist I encourage women to understand their fertility and menstrual cycle so they are in control. For natural contraception all you need is a regular cycle and some commitment to take your temperature daily and monitor your body’s signs of fertility, until your fertile pattern is clear.
You are then armed with the knowledge of when exactly you are fertile and for how long, so you can choose to have safe sex or abstain during this period. Barrier methods are a good compliment to natural contraception.
