Infertility
Being unable to conceive within one year of trying is becoming a more common experience in Australia and around the world. When I first trained in Natural Fertility Management, the statistics were 1 in 15 couples experiencing fertility problems, that is now 1 in 6, in just a 5 year period.
A growing problem for both males and females
There are many and varied reasons for this growing problem, affecting both men and women. In fact the male sperm count has decreased 50% in the last 50 years as testicular and prostate problems increase. Links have been made to nutrition and exposure to chemicals and oestrogens.
More complicated for women
For women the issues behind fertility can be more complicated. On a physical level it may involve hormonal imbalances, conditions such as endometriosis, poly cystic ovarian syndrome, nutritional deficiencies, chemical or radiation toxicity, or infections to name a few.
Preconceptual Care Improves Fertility
Emotions and stress can also play a big role in fertility as mother nature protects us from falling pregnant when conditions are less than optimal for a developing child. I suggest couples experiencing infertility begin a preconception program before attempting artificial methods of conception.
IVF and Reproductive Technologies
The rates of deformities and health conditions for babies from IVF and other reproductive technologies is at least twice that for other babies, taking up 50% of the beds in neonatal intensive care.
Improved Chances
If natural methods are unsuccessful at least the couples health is at an optimum level, increasing their chances of a successful outcome and healthy child with reproductive technology. The current success rate for reproductive technologies is around 20 –30% compared to preconception care at around 80% for previously infertile couples in a study conducted by Foresight.
