Medical Intuitives

With the emergence of mind body medicine, where an appreciation of the influence of the thoughts, emotions and attitudes on physical manifestation of disease is primary, it is interesting to note that this is nothing new. Throughout history, across cultures and religions there have always been people who were able to access information on the health and well being of others without being trained as a physician, often speaking in medical terminology, which great specificity to the organs and their disfunction,  as well as the treatment required to repair or restore the body to health. Medical intuitives generally access this information in an altered state of consciousness, such as hypnosis, trance, sleep or meditation. It appears that in this state they are able to tap into the super conscious, subconscious or collective conscious and tune into the specific individual via their name, birth date and possibly location.

A modern example is Carolyn Myss author of Anatomy of Spirit which discusses the relationship between the spiritual lessons of each chakra and disease or disharmony that may be experienced as a doorway to physical, emotion or spiritual growth. Her experience as a medical intuitive in a modern scientific world could be a difficult one, however she aligned herself with a medical practitioner and together they help people, she gives the cause of the disease, its depth and intensitiy and the physician backs that up with medical tests and treatments as appropriate. An example would be a man with a growth in his throat, Myss diagnoses an issue at work which is not being spoken up about or acted upon over a long period of time, with a metaphysical sensation like swallowing concrete, and the medical diagnosis is throat cancer. Medical and complementary therapies are prescribed to support the physical symptoms while the cause is dealt with via spiritual counselling and self expression (and a job change!). The result is usually a speedier recovery and less likelihood of reoccurance as well as greater understanding of how to maintain health.

Struggle for recognition and avoiding being labeled a fraud or prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license or persecuted for being a ‘witch’, has been an ongoing historical challenge for medical intuitives. Edgar Cayce, probably the most well known medical intuitive in the USA was a  devout Christian. He continually questioned whether the information that came through him was the work of God or the Devil. However, to the tens of thousands who received readings from him and found his diagnoses and treatment to be very accurate and beneficial, there was no question as to the ‘goodness’ of his work. He lived a modest life, never trying to make money from his gift, but worked towards the spiritual evolution of humanity and the relief of suffering. He struggled to convince the doctors of the time of the validity of his work, although some did see his successes and even availed themselves of his skills, many dismissed him as unscientific and fraudulent. He and his family ensured that the information that he received was recorded and collated to extract general remedies and advice that would be of benefit to humanity as a whole. Many books have been written about his life and the treatments he prescribed which covered everything from patented medicines, herbs, nutrition, exercise, electrical devices, osteopathic treatment and many others.
