Sound Healing

We all have music that makes us feel happy, energetic, relaxed or melancholy. We sing to our children to calm and sooth them and we sing in the shower when we are happy. The tone the tune the rhythm or beat, each having certain frequencies which influence us. We are attracted to frequencies that resonate with our own vibration or that remedy a state of mind. So sound can have a healing effect on us.

If we imagine every cell in our body as an instrument in a massive orchestra, each playing its own note, similar and in harmony with that of other instruments grouped together. Each group representing a tissue type, then sectioned into different organs. Each section plays a different part of the music, all intergrated together like the homoeostasis of the body. The harmony of the notes played by each cell creates the resonant frequency of our body. If individual instruments/cells begin to play out of tune/become sick or whole sections/organs fall out of sync, dis-ease and ill health become apparent.

Every cell when broken down to its smallest parts is actually comprised of energy or frequencies. So to heal we need only retune the cell or organ to the correct healthy frequency. With sound healing you work with the principle of entrainment, like tuning forks. Play a note on one tuning fork and another fork placed near it will begin to resonate in harmony with it. So we can expose the body to sound frequencies and reharmonise our cellular orchestra. This can be as simple as the pleasure we gain from playing a beautiful piece of music, singing humming or toning to ourselves or for others or be more focused.

The Ayurvedic system of chakras, the centres of the body where energy is channeled through into the body, each have a relationship to certain frequencies. The musical scale sounds of  ‘do, ra, me fa, so la ti do’ as in The Sound of Music, resonate with the chakras from the base to the crown. Each chakra also relates to certain organs and glands, emotions, and other physiological functions. If we need to heal any organ governed by that chakra we can use the resonate note of that energy centre to increase the energy into the desired cells.

In sound healing instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls, crystal singing bowls, gongs, bells, didgeridoos, drums and the toning of the human voice can be used to influence the frequencies of the human orchestra. You may be standing, sitting or laying down to receive sound healing, you relax and stay in your body (not your mind) by focusing on the breath and allow the waves of sound to penetrate through you. Sound can also be use to enhance the effectiveness of other types of energetic healing such as Reiki, Pranic or spiritual healing. As the practitioner is focusing on their breath and drawing energy through their own body, chanting or toning a note can intensify the flow of chi into the person receiving the healing. Sound healing is a safe and pleasant way to help the body heal itself.
